Emily Louise Sherkey Stark

Emily Louise Sherkey Stark, 98, formerly of Snow Hill, died Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the home of her son William, and his wife Sara, in Browntown, Wisconsin. Her son Paul was at her side. Born November 1, 1915 in Snow Hill, she was the daughter of the late William Maer Sherkey and Lillie Layfield Sherkey. She married William Emil Stark in 1940 and they raised five children. In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, she worked at the old Strickland's Five and Dime in Snow Hill, as a telephone operator and, in later years, at the Snow Hill Middle School cafeteria. She loved to travel, history and architecture. She was known to be an excellent cook, ruthless card player and gracious hostess. Emily was a lifelong member of Makemie Memorial Presbyterian Church in Snow Hill. She was a member of Worcester Chapter #102 Order of the Eastern Star and loved the star point Adah. In addition to her two sons, she is survived by three other children, Charles Stark (Judy) of Florence, SC, Sarah Lockfaw (Merrill) of Pocomoke City, MD, and Cheryl Booth (David) of Brunswick, MD; six grandchildren, James Stark, Wesley Lockfaw, Kim Gausmann, Henry Wise, Philip Wise and Jennifer Booth; and seven great grandchildren, Noah King, Caleb King, Jacob King, Lydia Gausmann, Shakira Wise, Chanel Wise and Philip Wise. She also leaves behind a large extended family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her eight siblings and her husband, William, who passed in 1995. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Makemie Memorial Presbyterian Church in Snow Hill, followed by an Order of the Eastern Star service, which begins at 11:00 a.m. Following the Eastern Star service, a funeral service will be held and will be officiated by the Reverend Debra Latture.
