Alfred Thomas Matthews III

Alfred Thomas Matthews, III, 87, of Salisbury, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, May 15, 2023. He was born February 23, 1936, in Salisbury, a son of the late Alfred Thomas Matthews, Jr. and Avis Melrose Berry Matthews. Al graduated from Wicomico High School with the class of ’55. He proudly served his country for a combined 32 years in the Army National Guard and the US Army and was deployed to Operation Desert Storm. He retired after a successful career of 39 years as a city engineer associate for the City of Salisbury. All that knew him knew a man who could fix anything, especially if it pertained to automobiles or engines in general, big and small. He was proud of his nickname “Mr. Fix-it.” He was an active member of Family Ministries in Bridgeville and very active with the Eastern Shore Threshermen & Collector’s Association, where he served on the Board of Directors for many years. He will be remembered as a hardworking, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Yvonne (Lewis) Alexander Matthews; sons, Russell Matthews and Anthony Matthews and companion, Jen and their daughter, Alexis; step-daughter-in-law, Becky Alexander and family, Ryan and Heather; step children, Beverly Alexander Rehm and husband Danny, and family, Katie, Sarah, Andy and Danielle; Gregory Alexander and wife Terri, and family, Greg, Jr. and Jennifer; and Wade Alexander and wife Shannon, and their family, Laken, Wyatt and Mason; Amanda Jenkins, dear family friend; several great grandchildren; and a sister, Jean LeCompte and her family, Scott and Pam. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years Dorothy Figgs Matthews; brother-in-law, Neil LeCompte; and a step son, Jeff Alexander. A brief committal service will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel of the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock. Following the committal service, family and friends are invited to Family Ministries, 109 Market St, Bridgeville, DE 19933 at 12:00 noon for a celebration of Al's life and food and fellowship.
